Our therapists often use myofascial release, heat, cold, ultrasound, e-stim and rehabilitative stretches and exercises to help speed recovery from an injury. Myofascial Release is a hands on approach to treatment similar to massage therapy that produces a profound healing effect upon the body tissues, eliminating pain and restoring motion. This is a very effective treatment option for many sports injuries including tennis or golf elbow, rotator cuff injury and plantar fasciitis.
There are two types of myofascial release: direct and indirect.
- Direct myofascial release (or deep tissue work) method works on the restricted fascia (it is the bag that surrounds each of our muscles). Practitioners use knuckles, elbows, or other instruments (like FAKTR Technique) to slowly stretch the tight fascia by applying a moderate force. Direct myofascial release looks to stretch, lengthen, or mobilize adhesive tissues. The practitioner moves slowly through the layers of the fascia until the deep tissues are reached.
- The indirect method involves a gentle stretch, with only minimal pressure, which allows the fascia to “unwind” itself. The gentle traction applied to the restricted fascia will result in heat and increased blood flow in the area. This allows the body’s inherent ability for self correction to return, thus eliminating pain and restoring the optimum performance of the body.
After a thorough assessment we will prescribe a series of specific movements for each patient designed to facilitate the healing process. These corrective exercises help to decrease pain, restore muscular balance, improve proprioception, core strength, flexibility, and stability to prevent future injuries. The exercise programs teach the patient how to prevent the pain from re-occurring so that they do not have to frequently return to the therapist.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization
At Bradford Family Chiropractic we use various forms of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) techniques including FAKTR@ techniques that enable our clinicians to effectively break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. These technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to specifically detect and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation.
These treatments often include evaluation of function and treatment of the kinetic chain while utilizing various forms of rehabilitation at the same time. Also incorporated is treatment in the position of provocation and during motion. Therapies like FAKTR can be utilized to treat a multitude of soft tissue or structural conditions that are not easily treated with other modalities.

With every minor to major injury, scar tissue can form. When scar tissue begins it creates a stop in full movement of muscles. Stretching can help reduce this type of possible permanent tissue. This is something that needs to be avoided.

Kinesio® Taping Method
Kinesio® Taping Method , or K-Tape, involves utilizing a special elastic-like tape over and around muscles and/or joints in order to assist and give support to affected tissues as well as to prevent over-contraction. Basically, there are times when the muscles are in spasm (too tight) or too weak and applying the tape to these areas can make patients feel immediately better. It can also be applied to support a joint, tendon, or ligament — all in the name of pain relief.
While most people think of tape as a restrictor of motion, this type kinesiotaping is designed to support and facilitate normal motion. This is a very effective treatment option for many sports injuries including runner's knee, heel spurs, chronic ankle sprain and rotator cuff strain. With this method the patient can still be a full participant in the activities which he or she desires, just with a bit of aid. Our therapists wrap moist hot packs in several layers of towels. They are then applied directly on the exposed area that needs treatment. The heat provided by the hot packs has several important benefits. It relaxes tight muscles causing tissues to relax. This simple measure decreases muscle tension or spasms which is effective in pain relief. It also causes vasodilatation of the blood vessels which increases circulation to the area. Patients with muscle strains, spasms, or arthritis often benefit from treatment with moist hot packs. This is a very effective treatment option for many sports injuries such as back and neck strain.
Ultrasound machines are a treatment modality used by therapists that utilize high or low frequency sound waves for both pain relief and to reduce inflammation. These sound waves are transmitted to the surrounding tissue and vasculature. They penetrate the muscles to cause deep tissue/muscle warming. This promotes tissue relaxation and therefore is useful in treating muscle tightness and spasms. The warming effect of the sound waves also cause vessel vasodilatation and increase circulation to the area that assists in healing. The physical therapist can also adjust the frequency on the machine to use waves that will decrease inflammation. This is a very effective treatment option for many sports injuries including tennis and golf elbow, acute ankle sprain and rotator cuff tendonitis.
A TENS unit stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and is typically used for pain relief. It is a small battery operated machine that uses electrical transmission to decrease pain. Electrodes are applied to the affected area. The machine is turned on and an electrical current is sent through the electrodes. A tingling sensation is felt in the underlying skin and muscle. This signal disrupts the pain signal that is being sent from the affected area to the surrounding nerves. By breaking this signal, the patient experiences less pain.

Electrical muscle stimulation
Electric Stimulation is commonly used for pain relief and to reduce inflammation. E- stim uses an electrical current to cause a single muscle or a group of muscles to contract. By placing electrodes on the skin in various locations the physical therapist can recruit the appropriate muscle fibers. Contracting the muscle via electrical stimulation helps strengthen the affected muscle. The physical therapist can change the current setting to allow for a forceful or gentle muscle contraction. Along with increasing muscle strength, the contraction of the muscle also promotes blood supply to the area that assists in healing. This is a very effective treatment option for many sports injuries including back strain, chronic ankle sprain and knee sprain.
